AQUA DOME
CUTTING EDGE AQUAPONICS
CONCEPT / SITE TBD / 700SF
The Aqua Dome is a 30-foot diameter polycarbonate greenhouse dome, specifically designed for a biology teacher pioneering an innovative method of aquaponics. This unique structure integrates mycelium growth with leafy vegetables, creating a symbiotic system where the exchange of nutrients fosters the health of both organisms. The dome’s clear polycarbonate shell allows ample sunlight to reach the plants while maintaining a stable internal environment suitable for this intricate cultivation process.
At the heart of the dome, a series of underground pits are dedicated to mushroom growth, harnessing the coolness of the earth to passively ventilate the space. This ventilation system efficiently spreads carbon dioxide from the mycelium to nourish the surrounding plants, creating a self-sustaining cycle that mimics natural ecosystems. The passive cooling also regulates the temperature within the dome, making it an energy-efficient solution for year-round use.
A large gantry, thoughtfully positioned above the central pits, allows for easy harvesting of both the mycelium and the leafy vegetables without disturbing the delicate system. The Aqua Dome represents a balance of nature and technology, blending agricultural innovation with sustainable design principles, offering an ideal space for research and experimentation in symbiotic growing methods.
