FIKA
RESTING IN THE NORWEGIAN FOREST
CONCEPT / NORWAY / 1,500SF
Nestled within the serene Norwegian woods, adjacent to a tranquil lake, FIKA is a small yet impactful house that draws from its natural surroundings. The design seamlessly integrates with the forested landscape, featuring floor-to-ceiling glass that blurs the boundary between the interior and the outdoors. Residents can fully experience the beauty of the changing seasons, while the flat roof emphasizes the simplicity and unobtrusive nature of the home.
The house adopts an industrial minimalist aesthetic, utilizing weathering steel that echoes the ruggedness of the surrounding environment. Over time, the steel will develop a rich patina, adding warmth and texture to the clean lines and functional form. The structure’s minimalist interior layout complements the exterior, with a focus on openness and light that fills the space, enhancing the connection with nature.
Charred wood slats, inspired by traditional Japanese architecture, provide both privacy and shading, softening the modern industrial elements. These slats filter light into the space and create a tactile dialogue between the natural materials, evoking a sense of calm and balance. FIKA is a retreat that marries Nordic simplicity with Japanese design sensibility, offering a mindful, contemplative space for rest and connection.
